Amcha Pravas (1963) :: rare & out-of-print First Edition

For bibliophiles and those interested in travelogues, we are pleased to offer an extremely rare and unique first-hand account — Amcha Pravas — of journeys across numerous pilgrimage centres throughout the country.

First published in 1963 in Marathi, this rare book is one of the finest pilgrimage travelogues in any Indian language. The author, Madhavrao Hirlikar, was a devotee of Samarth Ramdas in Satara. As a diligent diarist, he maintained a detailed account of his tirtha yatras across the country. This book comprises an account of five extensive pilgrimage travels between the years 1948 and 1962. The first journey in 1948 spanned across Dehu-Alandi, Haridwar, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Kolkata, Jagannathpuri and Kanyakumari. The second journey in 1950 and the third in 1951 were devoted to the pilgrimage centres in Maharashtra and in Karnataka respectively. The fourth journey in 1952 traversed the Himalayan pilgrimage sites. The fifth pilgrimage was the longest in which the author journeyed across Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haridwar, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Nepal, Odisha, Madras and Tamil Nadu.

These extensive tirtha yatras include a vivid description of the Ashtavinayak temple yatras, the Char Dham yatras, and the 12 Jyotirlinga yatras. This travelogue was remarkable for the author's attention to detail. The absorbing account of his long pilgrimages is punctuated with several peculiar details of the expenses, the food and the places of stay, the local modes of transport such as the chariotesque tongas of Ayodhya etc.

Several images of this precious rarity, including the complete table of contents, are attached herewith for the perusal of those interested.
