The Wedding Songs & Folklore of Gujarat by Rambhaben Gandhi (1961) :: rare & out-of-print

Born in 1911, Rambha Gandhi was one of the most prolific playwrights of her time who also wrote short stories, essays and songs. She was also actively involved in several social organisations and was a Councillor of the Bombay Municipal School Committee in the early 1950s.

We are pleased to offer one of her most unique and precious contributions in the realm of Gujarati folklore in general and of traditional Gujarati wedding lore in particular. This book was first published in 1961 by the devoted freedom fighter Ishwarlal M. Dave who was actively involved in several satyagraha movements and who endured the violent oppression of the British prior to independence. This rare First Edition on the wedding songs and the folklore of Gujarat is one of the finest volumes on the subject featuring a large collection of traditional Gujarati wedding songs painstakingly collected by the author. The folkloric collection in this book is particularly enriched by the author's absorbing commentary and insightful perspective on each folksong.

In an age when shrill electronic music and strident film songs have largely invaded the wedding festivities of the urban Indian milieu, this rare book offers an astounding outlook on the glorious exuberance of Gujarat's traditional heritage.

Several images of this precious rarity are attached herewith for the perusal of those interested.
