In the early 1940s, the legendary artist
Abanindranath Tagore dictated his autobiography –
Jorasankor Dhare – to
Rani Chanda in Bengali. Deeply insightful and intensely evocative, this autobiography of an Indian artist remains a milestone in the realm of Indian art writing. The first phase in this autobiography consists of his childhood, covering his upbringing in Jorasanko and the ordeal of his school life. The second phase includes the formation of images in his mind through his solitary communion with nature and his sojourns with the village folk. The third phase delves into his mature life as an artist at Jorasanko, revealing his profession as an artist, his techniques, ideology and the activities for the promotion of awareness and appreciation of Indian art.
The Gujarati translation of this marvellous autobiography was first published in Bombay in 1963. Several great Gujarati writers who had learnt Bengali, either in Santiniketan or elsewhere, contributed to the glorious tradition of the Gujarati translation of Bengali literature. Jorasankor Dhare was sensitively translated into Gujarati by Ramnik Meghani, one of the finest translators of Bengali literature into Gujarati.
