Lavangi (1946/50) :: rare monochrome & colour-tinted lobby cards

For connoisseurs & collectors of rare film & photography memorabilia, we are pleased to offer an extremely rare set of twenty gelatin silver lobby cards of the film Lavangi.

First released in 1946 in Tamil and dubbed in Hindi in 1950, this film featured Kumari Rukmani in the title role of Lavangi alongside one of the legendary pioneers of South Indian cinema Y. V. Rao in the role of Jagannatha Panditaraja, the celebrated Sanskrit poet who served under the patronage of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.

These 20 original gelatin silver lobby cards, featuring ten images each in their monochrome and colour-tinted versions, are extremely rare and hard to find, especially in such excellent condition as the ones we are offering. These precious rarities offer a unique glimpse into the art of colour-tinted photographs in the black-and-white era of Indian cinema.

Condition: Pre-owned. Excellent. These high-quality gelatin silver prints have retained their original lustre. The corners/edges of these lobby cards bear a few residual marks of the drawing pins used for display on the notice-boards of cinema halls. Natural foxing/yellowing on the reverse blank side owing to age.
Inscriptions: The name of the film and the year is handwritten on the reverse blank side of some of these lobby cards.

Suresh Joshi :: rare & out-of-print First Editions


Suresh Joshi was a colossal intellectual in the realm of Gujarati literature. Widely acknowledged as the father of 'modern' Gujarati literature, a profound exploration of existentialism and phenomenology can be experienced in his writings. Suresh Joshi's work as an essayist has been acclaimed as a milestone in the history of Gujarati literature. He wrote over a thousand 'creative' essays on a wide range of themes that have influenced an entire generation of writers after him. In memory of this distinguished writer, we are pleased to offer a collection of extremely rare and out-of-print First Editions featuring his fascinating essays.

The first book — Bhavyaami — is a compilation of 56 of his most representative essays. Only 750 copies of this rare First Edition were published in 1984. The cover of this rare book was designed by the great artist Gulammohammed Sheikh. The second rare book — Ramyani Vikshya — is a collection of personal essays by Suresh Joshi. Though this book was prepared during his lifetime, it was published in 1987, one year after his demise. The third rare book — Pratham Purush Ek Vachan — is a collection of 48 autobiographical essays by Suresh Joshi. This book was also published posthumously in 1987 and is exceedingly rare and hard to find. The fourth rare book — Atmanepadi — contains a collection of interviews given by Suresh Joshi. These profound conversations offer an insightful revelation into his writing style and thought process. The fifth rarity — Pashyanti — contains a collection of 72 hitherto unpublished literary essays by Suresh Joshi. This rare and hard-to-find book was published posthumously in 1993. The cover of this beautiful book was also designed by the renowned artist Gulammohammed Sheikh.
