My Childhood with Gandhiji (1957) :: rare First Edition

Prabhudas Gandhi, the son of Mahatma Gandhi's nephew Chhaganlal Gandhi, was only a year old when his father emigrated to South Africa in 1902 on the advice of Gandhiji. In 1904, Gandhiji established the Phoenix Settlement near Durban where Chhaganlal Gandhi and his brother Maganlal joined as inmates. Prabhudas Gandhi grew up in South Africa among the first batch of Satyagrahis under the guidance of his grand-uncle Gandhiji. After his return to India in 1914, he also stayed in Santiniketan. A devoted Gandhian who led a life of simplicity and service, Prabhudas Gandhi was imprisoned during the Bardoli Satyagraha for six months in 1932.

We are now pleased to offer an extremely rare and hard-to-find First Edition of the memoirs of his childhood with Gandhiji in South Africa. Originally written in a comprehensive Gujarati volume, the English translation of this book was first published in 1957 and continues to remain one of the most engrossing accounts of Gandhiji's life in South Africa, where his doctrine of non-violent Satyagraha took shape and his extraordinary powers of leadership first came to the fore. In the words of Henry Polak, this rare book, "so sincerely and objectively written, helps to record the creative period in Gandhiji's life which ultimately led to his major task of building up the great movement towards and the ultimate achievement of Indian independence in the spirit of Ahimsa."

Many images of this rare First Edition (including the complete table of contents and the list of illustrations) are attached herewith for the perusal of those interested.
