Mahadev Desai :: rare First Editions

Born in Surat in 1892, Mahadev Desai served as a personal secretary to Mahatma Gandhi from 1917 to 1942. During these 25 years, he maintained a detailed chronicle of Gandhiji's daily activities in his diaries. In the words of Rajmohan Gandhi"Waking up before Gandhi in pre-dawn darkness, and going to sleep long after his Master, Mahadev Desai lived Gandhi's day thrice over — first in an attempt to anticipate it, next in spending it alongside Gandhi, and finally in recording it into his diary".

Mahadev Desai's diaries offer a unique glimpse into the freedom movement and into the personal world of Mahatma Gandhi. In the words of the great anthropologist Verrier Elwin: "Gandhi as a politician is fully represented by his own speeches and statements. It was Mahadev's special privilege to be able to show the world the Mahatma off the stage and below the platform".

Published in 22 volumes during a long period of 50 years from 1948 to 1997, these diaries form a significant milestone in Gujarati literature.

We are now pleased to offer a selection of eight extremely rare First Editions of Mahadev Desai's diaries.
